Homi Baba
Homi Baba started out very ordinary just like any other person. Although he came from an affluent background, he had many bad habits. Though he was driven by these vices, his spirit yearned for something more than he knew himself. Through a series of events, he was led to Shirdi, under the notion that if one surrenders themself to Baba, He will give that person His grace. For Homi Baba, this meant unconditional love and internal freedom. He left his will at the feet of Shirdi Baba and accepted His will as his own. He decided not to work or engage in any material activities, for his own self interest. This led him to resort to take alms from others. This process proved to be the greatest ordeal of his life. Having had come from such an opulent background, begging for his food, not having proper shelter, and being seen as an outcast, were all very difficult for Homi Baba. This process shredded his ego down. Without having any physical guru to guide him, Homi Baba relied solely on the idea that surrendering to Shirdi Baba would bring him to His grace. Through his trials, he realized that there’s nothing in the world worth striving for, and that anything perceived through the five senses, was impermanent. With this mindset, he continued on his journey of extreme penance until one day, Shirdi Baba’s grace illuminated his soul, and he realized his true nature and that everything worked on Baba’s will only. It was the surrendering of his personal will, that transformed him. Homi Baba, from that time onwards, engrossed himself in Shirdi Baba’s name and form. People were drawn to Homi Baba, recognizing the divine energy that shone from within him. Similar to Shirdi Baba who never left the village limits once He arrived, Homi Baba never left Shirdi after he first arrived. In 1978, when Maa met Homi Baba in Shirdi, she took Homi Baba as her guru, as he initiated Maa on her own spiritual path. Homi Baba’s legacy lives on through Maa, who is a living embodiment of surrendership, unconditional love, authenticity, and the idea that nothing on the outside matters as long as the person is pure at heart. Homi Baba took Maha Samadhi on April 6, 1995 in Shirdi.
